Who is required to register permanent residence in Iceland?
Anyone who stays in Iceland for six months or more must register permanent residence in the country. Persons who are citizens of an EEA Member State may stay and work in Iceland for up to 3 months or up to 6 months in order to look for a job without having to register their stay in the country.
What do you need permanent registration in Iceland for?
You need to register in Iceland for the purpose of looking for a job, completing a student or professional internship, or in the event of a potential employment. Permanent check-in is a prerequisite for obtaining health insurance. People obtain health insurance 6 months after their permanent residence in Iceland is registered. To register, you must first have a Kennital ID number, which we can apply for in the National Register of Iceland (Þjóðskrá – www.skra.is).
Attention! Obtaining a registration number does not mean that you are permanently registered (lögheimili) in Iceland.
How do I register permanent residence in Iceland?
If we already have a Kennel Club number and an address, it should be easy to check in. We register your permanent residence address in Þjóðskrá (Population Register). It must be remembered that registration is only possible in real estate with the status of a residential property, i.e. a flat or a house.
How do I change my permanent address in Iceland?
For people already living in Iceland who only want to change their registered address, the entire registration procedure is free and very simple. The consent of the property owner is not required to check in. You must check-in within 7 days of obtaining your Kennel Club number. To do this, simply complete the online application (link).
