Electronic identifier (Rafræn skílriki) in Iceland

What is an electronic identifier (Rafræn skílriki)?

An electronic ID is a convenient and fast way to log into various Icelandic official websites. It is designed for electronic communication and is issued in cooperation with the Icelandic authorities. The identifier can be assigned to a phone number or a personal payment card.

When choosing the option to assign an electronic ID to a telephone number, the only requirement is to have a smartphone and a valid SIM card registered in one of the Icelandic networks (e.g. iCall, NOVA, Síminn or Vodafone). This is by far the most popular method.

However, if we want to assign it to a personal payment card, we will need a special bank card reader, connected to the computer via a USB port. Rafræn skílriki (Icelandic electronic ID) can be activated at your bank, mobile phone lounge or Auðkenni salon.

The documents that we will need to register are:
• proof of identity (ID card, driving license or passport),
• correct sim card,
• smartphone.

The facility employee will have to make a xero copy of your ID card and provide you with a relevant document for signing. After that, you will have to choose a 4-digit PIN code that you will use each time you log in. It is important to remember this code.

What does logging in using an electronic ID look like?

When logging in to various types of official Icelandic websites, you must enter your phone number as login, after which you will receive a message on the phone asking you to accept the login. Once accepted, you will need to enter the PIN you selected when creating your Rafræn skílriki ID and click SIGN IN.
